Father's Day with Papa Jack

We drove down on Sunday to spend some time with my dad on his special day, Father's Day.  We thought we'd take him out to dinner, but he suggested we have his home cooking--chicken, dressing, and potato salad, and tomatoes just picked from his garden.  Yumm!  Yumm!

It was such a hot day, so we headed down to Dickie Farms (map) for some of the best peach ice cream you'll ever eat.  The peaches were ripe.  Really ripe!  You can buy the pretty ones that have some shelf life in a case for $18, or you can go to the back like we did and, if they have them, pick through the ripe and not so pretty ones and they are $6 a case, like we did.  We washed and slice the peaches and put away 19 gallons of that sweet goodness to make smoothies for the coming year.

Since Father's Day occurs right during peach season this could become an annual event for us.

It was a special treat for me as a father to spend time with my father, but I managed to persuade my wife to do one thing for me this father's day... to let me have some new pets.

Here they are!  These are Japanese bantam chickens called chabo.  They are very gentle and are no louder than the other birds in our yard.   My father had chickens when he was a child.  He loves them.  He also passed that love of chickens on to me when I was a boy.  At one time we had about 50 chickens in the back yard.  I plan to have just a few at a time.  It will be great to show my children how great chickens are as pets.  It's so fun to watch them set on eggs and raise their young.  Then I'll sell off the next generation so others can enjoy them as pets, too.
