Hank Accepts Christ!

Hank made a courageous decision today to give his life to Jesus. Of all the decisions in life, this is the most important decision a person can make. We are proud of him.

Hank is an amazing young man. Often when a boy is considered a good person by all those around him, he can be a little slow to realize that he is a sinner in need of a Savior like everyone else. Not so with Hank. He is a very good student who gets along with his peers, and he's an obedient son. He honors his parents and gets along with his siblings. He helps around the house without complaining. He has made great grades and I have never once had to make him do his homework. He is a self-starter, and usually doesn't leave things half-done. I've had many students under my supervision and he comes to me for help only when he can't do it himself and is truly lost. Teachers love students like Hank!

Thanks to his parents, whom I have never met but respect a great deal, Hank understands things a lot of adults struggle with, like sowing and reaping, reward and punishment, and sacrifice for a higher cause. Hank is generous to a fault. When he came here, his life goal was to travel around the world helping poor people. How is it, that a person like that is humble enough to accept the news that he's a sinner condemned to hell without any hope in the world? How could he see his need for God? Why is it that he didn't just say like so many people that he didn't feel he needed Jesus to get to heaven because he was a good person the way he was.
I think the answer is simple. I think God gave him a humble, soft heart that is hungry for the truth.

Since he came here, Hank heard all about God being the Creator and sustainer of the universe. He learned that God knew from the beginning that man would go his own way, turn from Him and reject Him and His commands. He learned that Jesus was there with God during creation, and that God planned to send Jesus to die in the place of sinners from the beginning. He read about how God was a holy and perfect judge, and he had to punish evil in order to be a good judge and to be true to His nature, so because of that, the soul who sins is the soul who dies. God is also truth. He cannot lie, because to do so would be against His nature. So as the Bible says, all sinners will be punished with eternal separation from God in a lake of fire. But thanks be to God that He is also a loving Father, who cares enough to do the ultimate to bring about reconciliation. He sent his own Son, who lived a life and died a death no one would want to endure, and all the while this Son Jesus, never sinned even once. That's why He was the perfect sacrifice--able to die in the place of all sinners. Since He was obedient even unto death, God raised Him after 3 days and gave Him power and glory in heaven. Hank learned that all who believe, repent and choose to live their lives for Jesus, would get the free gift of salvation. In other words, he would have his sins forgiven, past, present and future and be adopted into the family of God. And death would no longer be a fearsome thing, because after death Christians will experience a resurrection when Christ returns to take us to heaven.

After church each Sunday, Hank can give an excellent summary of the lesson and the sermon.
Pastor Lee Smith and Pastor Chris Jordan have been great influences on him. He also sees the Bible taught and practiced at his school, Intown Community School. Teachers like Elizabeth Stewart have been instrumental in bringing him to Christ as well. But ultimately it has been the Holy Spirit using God's Word in Hank's willing heart. Duk-Sun and I are grateful to God for allowing us to witness His truth and love make another person receptive to Him. Please congratulate Hank and encourage him for his faith.

Thank you!

We Have a Hearing Date!

A letter came today announcing our hearing date for finalizing Hannah's adoption!
It's going to be February 13th, at 8:30am. She will officially become Hannah E. Spillers then.

After all this time of "having children, but not really having them", we are finally going to be parents! She will be 2 years old on January 7th. We were hoping to adopt her around that time, but we're happy just the same.

Hannah is growing and changing every day. She imitates little phrases any of us say, and it seems when I clear my throat, sneeze, cough, etc., she immediately imitates me. Since her mother is so busy with the baby now, Hannah is becoming a regular Daddy's girl. I often wondered why the oldest child takes after the dad while the second-born takes after the mom (regarding mannerisms and personality), and now I know. It's because mom is so busy with the baby.

Father Wants S----- Too, Says Case Worker

Today we got a visit from S-----'s case worker, and the news is that she says the father is now active in attempting to lay claims to his baby. This all depends, of course on him satisfactorily cleaning up his act and going through a home study with all the things that entails. Other sources we have, say that since he has a criminal record, he may not be eligible, so we are unsure if having a criminal record automatically disqualifies a person in this type of case.

I've got to hand it to the DFCS, they are diligent in getting involved with people and giving them a chance to prove that they'll be good parents before they give up on them. Although we are unwavering in our desire to keep S----- if the Lord wills, at the same time we are still excited to see not only that the biological parents chose life instead of abortion, but they are interested in raising her.

Duk-Sun and I aren't about to give up hope yet though, so we'd appreciate it if you would keep asking God to do what He thinks is best.

Sulser Family Visits

Our friends, the Sulser's, who used to live in Atlanta were down from North Carolina where they have been living for the past 6 years. They shared with us the good news that Alan will work here in Atlanta once again. We are excited that they will be coming back to our town. The kids got along quite well and it was hard to let them go when the time came.

Michelle and Hannah Share a Room

Hannah always wanted to sleep in the bunk bed it seems. And she loves Michelle better than ice cream, I think. Since Laura isn't living with us anymore, Michelle wanted to move upstairs with Hannah. They are so good for each other! Michelle reads stories to Hannah and sings to her and sleeps in her bed when she's scared to sleep alone. Who could ask for a better sister? Oh, and Michelle wanted her mother to see the cardboard elephant she made at school, so she's holding it. Michelle is also a great help with the baby. She loves to hold her and she sometimes feeds her too.

Laura is Back with Her Father

Laura went back to live with her father today. We will miss her. Her father agreed for her to stay with us until Christmas vacation started. After that, it was going to be up to Laura to decide where she wanted to live. She chose to go back and stay with her father in spite of the lack of supervision there. While she was here, she had to do her homework and some chores as well. She was not always thrilled to do these things. I think having any limitations regarding the media and sweets were rough on her as well.

We are sad to see Laura go, and especially sad that more progress was not made while she was here. But since we gave Laura a steady "diet" of God's Word, we are comforted by Isaiah 55 that says:

10 As the rain and the snow
come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,

11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

Please remember Laura in your prayers.
Thank you.

S----- is a month old today.

S----- had a present from Uncle Sam today. While at the DFCS Christmas party last night, we all saw Hannah's original foster mom, Ms. Morris. It was a nice reunion. Ms. Morris was so glad to see Hannah. I know it had to take a while for her pain to lessen. I can't imagine how it felt to give up Hannah after a year and a half. I understood she was taking the separation a little hard after we took Hannah for good. That's why we deliberately kept our distance for a while...to make it a little easier on her. Ms Morris had a new baby boy she was keeping, and her three adopted children were there. Hannah seemed to have no problem recognizing them. Too bad we forgot the camera!

Anyway, at the party we were asking her what kind of formula she used and where she got it and Ms. Morris informed us of a program that gives foster children free formula. So today I took Hannah and S----- to Decatur and we applied for the aid. Next time I'll take toys and books. It took longer than I thought, and Hannah got a little bored. We had to go through 6 different people if you include the security guard. The funny thing is, while killing time by walking around a big lobby area, Hannah was trying to get me to go to another part of the building. I told her that we had no business there. As it turns out, she was pointing to the last station we would go to before we were finished. It had been over 6 months since Hannah had been there, but she remembered a lot about the place. It wasn't what I'd call "a fun day", but it was nice to get a month of formula for S-----. That's money that can be spent on the other baby things.

It just goes to show that it is more blessed to give than to receive. We went to the party hoping to be a blessing to Ms. Morris, but she blessed us more by sharing this good news with us.

Dinner at Gammy's

We had a great time with Rae & Boyd Lyons at their house. They treated us to some delicious chicken tetrazzini. Afterwards the kids decorated Christmas cookies. Hannah was doing fine decorating until she looked around and saw the girls licking their fingers. She started licking the frosting and that was it. Somehow she lost interest in the cookie making part.

At Michelle's friend Ella's Party

Michelle was invited to Ella's birthday party. They decorated cookies and made ornaments and had lots of fun. Even Hannah was allowed to tag along. Here are some highlights.

Hannah and S-----, and Some Sad News

I hesitate to share this news, but we were informed today that S----- has a grandparent who is attempting to become her caregiver. Basically if the home checks out, meaning no criminal record, no prior DFACS involvement, and if they are able to care for the baby, they will get her. We are all very sad about the thought of losing her, but we are praying for God to give her the best home possible, and we are putting it in God's hands. Please join us in praying about this. Thank you!

Reminiscing About Japan

Duk-Sun and I lived in Japan together for several years. And it has been 10 years since we came back here to live. While we were there, there were many social occasions which were followed by a trip to a karaoke bar or box. There was one song which I learned pretty well and sang often. Being the foreigner, it made my friends quite happy to hear me sing such a song. I just happened to find it on YouTube. Check it out. It's called "Shimauta", or "Island Song", and it was performed by "The Boom", who are from Okinawa.

A Great Performance

Hank and Michelle participated in a Christmas Concert / Play at ICS Tuesday night. They memorized their songs and lines well. It was a delight to see them tell the story of Christmas so well.

Hot Enough for Water Balloons

I didn't take any photos, but today was so hot I let the kids throw water balloons at each other. The official high temperature was 76 degrees, but our outdoor thermometer read 82 degrees. We've been using the air conditioner at night to fight the 90% humidity. Butterflies and bees were flying around thinking it was spring. People were playing sports outdoors with their shirts off. This week is so warm I have to keep telling myself it is winter or I'll forget. Here's what kind of temperatures we're supposed to see tomorrow.

New Baby Bulletin

Today:
  • S----- was awake more than ever.
  • She lost her umbilical cord.
  • Michelle got to hold her long enough to say her arms were tired. She loved it!
Here are some photos.

One 10 and Four 3s

There we were, sitting in the living room at 10pm when the phone rang, and lo and behold, it was a lady from DFACS. I couldn't believe my ears. She asked if we would be willing to accept another child. I said it depends on the child's age. She said, "Is 3 weeks young enough for you?" I said, Wow! Are you kidding?" And she said there was a baby at the hospital and she had tried for 3 weeks to find a relative and couldn't. And she had tried calling folks for 3 hours and couldn't find anyone willing to take the infant home with them. I checked with Duk-Sun and said yes, and so now we have another baby. Her name is S---- E-------. It was exactly 3 hours after we got the call that we were leaving the hospital with this bundle of joy.

Laura's Care Package

Today Laura got a nice package from her mom filled with new clothes. Laura was so excited! She said she missed her mom in Argentina a lot and right away she wrote her a letter of thanks. We were all happy for her but sad at the same time because she hasn't seen her mom since August of last year. Her mom once had a green card but stayed out of the U.S. for over a year which means the green card basically expired. Now getting any kind of visa is really difficult for her, so she can't even come to visit her daughter.

A Convicting Message

Dr. David Jeremiah is doing a series on the power of love. I just heard the opening drama of this message about gossip while in the car and couldn't wait to get back home and hear the whole thing. Wow, it was quite a convicting, well done message! Click on the if you want to hear it. I like it because it challenges me to a higher standard than I'm living at now. One suggestion. Don't listen to it unless you really want to be challenged!

ABC Memory Verses

A while back I made this Power Point to help me memorize the verses we are learning at church. I just discovered a way to share it on the blog with Google Documents. Click on the slide to start the show.

Official Permission Granted!

This is the building where we had our meeting today. We signed papers and received a lot of papers and as of now, we have official permission to adopt Hannah! The next step is to pick a lawyer from a list, hand him the Affidavit of release and consent to adoption that we got today, and wait for our appointment to finalize the adoption in court. We are hoping to finish before Hannah's 2nd birthday, which will be on January 7th. We are very excited that we are this close now!
Hannah was very good today at the signing. It may be coincidence, but today out of the blue she started using the word "mine". No one had ever heard her say it before. I told her, I said, "Hannah, you are mine." She smiled something like this.

The lady on the left is Aleeza K. She has been involved with Hannah as her case worker since she was born. The lady on the right is Aleeza's new supervisor, Tiffany. Everyone at DFACS has been wonderful.
As I pause to reflect on this day I am thinking, "What a blessing--but also--gulp! What a big responsibility!" Please pray for me as I take on this long awaited role of fatherhood.
