Spring Break 2011

I am truly grateful this week to be alive and to have a house that protects me from storms.  On Monday night we had a really windy storm and at the end of it there was enough wind to bring down a branch on our house.  It hit the roof over our bedroom and broke and each half rolled (or bounced) of each side of the roof.  There were two roof decking boards damaged with a hole the size of a plate in one of them.  The rafters were not broken and neither car got hit.  Whew!   It could have been worse!

Our yard is full of trees and we enjoy having all of them, but some of those trees were too close to the house.  Since trees tend to have limbs that die and eventually fall off, and too many of the limbs were positioned over our roof, we made a decision to have a number of trees taken down this week.  Altogether, the house has had tree damage to the roof 4 times.  A sizable hole was made in the roof by a pine tree before we bought it and since we discovered the house there have been 3 occasions where we had tree damage to the roof.  One of our neighbors has a large, tall oak tree that leans over our house, and a baseball bat sized limb fell like an arrow through our roof 9 months ago.  I let him know we had tree guys here this week and he decided he would let them remove a cluster of 3 trees (including the one that damaged my roof) that are between his house and ours.

Here are a few photos of the last two days:
